Love of the Prophet (salallahu alayhi wa sallam)

Attention: open in a new window.

The necessity of loving Him

Why do we need to love him ? ; well in short, with out loving him our Imaan (faith) is incomplete, as described in the following hadith from Sahih al-Bukhari:

Narated By Anas : The Prophet said "None of you will have faith till he loves me more than his father, his children and all mankind."
(Bukhari Volume 001, Book 002, Hadith Number 014.)

A further hadith from Sunan at-Tirmidhi describes the result of loving our Beloved Prophet (and his Ahlul Bayt - his close family members):

Ali said that the Prophet took Hasan and Husayn (his two beloved grandsons) by the hand and said, "Whoever loves me and loves these two and their father (Maula 'Ali) and mother (Sayyida Fatima) will be with me on the Day of Rising."
(Sunan Tirmidhi Volume 005, Page 305)

Another hadith in Sahih al-Bukhari shows us that loving the Holy Prophet , will lead us to be with him on the Day of Judgement:

Narated By Anas : A man asked the Prophet about the Hour (i.e. Day of Judgment) saying, "When will the Hour be?" The Prophet said, "What have you prepared for it?" The man said, "Nothing, except that I love Allah and His Apostle ." The Prophet said, "You will be with those whom you love." We had never been so glad as we were on hearing that saying of the Prophet (i.e., "You will be with those whom you love.") Therefore, I love the Prophet , Abu Bakr and 'Umar, and I hope that I will be with them because of my love for them though my deeds are not similar to theirs. (Bukhari Volume 005, Book 057, Hadith Number 037)

The intense and extreme love of the Sahabah

In order to truly love the Prophet , we must understand how he was loved by his Companions. The Prophet famously said, in a Hadith reported by Bukhari, Muslim, Abu Dawud, Tirmidhi, Nasaa'i and others,:

'The best of the people are my generation (i.e. the Companions)'

So how did the Sahabah love the Holy Prophet ? Subhanallah, the narrations show that they loved him so much that they even showed intense passion for his blessed saliva Mubarak, his hair Mubarak, his sweet-smelling sweat Mubarak, the water that washed off his pure body whilst performing Wudu, and even his blessed urine Mubarak.

At the time of the Prophet (salallahu alayhi wa sallam), the Kuffar of Makkah sent a man named Urwa to go and see what the state of the Muslims was and to report back his findings. The incident is narrated Sahih al-Bukhari, as well as many other authentic books of hadith, and is as follows:

Urwa came to the Prophet and when he returned to his people (the Kuffar of Makkah) he said to them, "O people! By Allah, I have been to the kings and to Caesar, Khosrau and An-Najashi (as an ambassador), yet I have never seen any of them respected by his courtiers as much as Muhammad is respected by his companions. By Allah, if he spat, the spittle would fall in the hand of one of them who would rub it on his face and skin ; if he ordered them, they would carry out his order immediately; if he performed ablution, they would struggle to take the remaining water ; and when they spoke, they would lower their voices and would not look at his face constantly out of respect." (Sahih al-Bukhari Vol. 3, Book 50, No. 891 / Ahmad Ibn Hanbal / Tabarani / Ibn Hibban / Ba'haqi)

Obviously Urwa saw the prayers, the dhikr, the zuhd, the taqwa, and the God-fearing nature of the Sahaba. But what was it that he reported back to his people? What was it that he thought caused the greatest threat to the enemies of Islam in Makkah, and showed the greatest devotion to the deen of Islam?

It was the extreme and intense love for the Prophet !!! The Sahaba (who are known as the best generation as described above) would not let even the blessed saliva of the Prophet (salallahu alayhi wa sallam) fall to the ground! Subhanallah! Also note that this narration is found in Sahih al-Bukhari, which is regarded as the most authentic book in Islam after the Holy Qur'an.

'Bina ishq e nabi jo parhte hai Bukhari,

Aata hai bukhar unko nahi aati hai Bukhari!'

'Those who read Bukhari without the love for the Prophet ,

They end up with a fever, they do not understand Bukhari'

Even now it seems that the enemies of Islam are most afraid of the love that the Muslims have for the holy Prophet . They are plotting to remove this love from our hearts, as they know that this is the key to our faith. A top Yemeni Sunni scholar and a descendant of the holy Prophet , as-Sayyid ash-Shaykh Habib Ali al-Jifri describes the situation exceptionally in the following short clip:

The following Ahadith further demonstrate the intensity of the love of the Sahabah for the Holy Prophet :

1. Anas reported: I saw when the Messenger of Allah got his hair cut by the barber, his Companions came round him and they eagerly wanted that no hair should fall but in the hand of a person. (Sahih Muslim, Book 030, Number 5750)

2. It is narrated by al-Bukhari in his Sahih that Usman bin 'Abdullah bin Mawhab (radiallahu anh) said, "my family sent me to Umm Salamah (radiallahu anha) with a cup of water. And Umm Salamah (radiallahu anha) brought out a silver bottle which contained one of the hairs of the Prophet , and it used to be that if anyone came under the evil eye or ill health they used to send her a cup of water through which she would pass this hair [for drinking] and we used to look into the silver bottle: I saw some reddish hairs in it."

3. Imam al-Baihaqi, in his book Dalaail an Nabuwwah, narrates, with a sahih (sound) chain that Khalid ibn Walid (radiallahu anh) lost his helmet during the Battle of Yarmuk. He asked the people to help him find it and they searched repeatedly until it was found. They saw it was a very old helmet and thought it strange that Khalid ibn Walid (radiallahu anh) was so insistent on finding it. Khalid ibn Walid (radiallahu anh) told them: "The Prophet performed 'Umrah and then shaved his head. I rushed with the people to get some of his hair. I got some of the hair from the front part of his head which I put in this helmet. Every time I went into battle with this helmet, Allah gave me victory."

4. In another narration of the above event, Safiyya (radiallahu anha) narrates that the helmet of Khalid bin Walid (radiallahu anh) contained some blessed hair of the Prophet . When that helmet fell in the battlefield, he started to search for it, when many Sahaba were martyred in that battle, the people strongly complained about (what he did). At this he replied: I did not do so just to find the cap, actually It contained the blessed hair of Prophet and I feared that It might get into the hands of Mushrikeen and I might lose the Barakah of it (Qadhi Iyaadh in Ash-Shifa, Volume No. 1, Page No. 619)

5. Imam Jalal al-Din Suyuti reports from Tabarani and Bayhaqi who narrate from Hukaymah bint Umaymah (radiallahu anh) with an authentic chain of transmission, she said, the Prophet had a wooden bowl in which He used to urinate and was placed under His bed. One night, He searched for it but did not find it and asked for it saying, 'Where is the bowl?' The members of the house replied 'Umm Salamah's slave girl Barrah drank from it' . The Prophet replied, 'surely she has protected herself from the fire with a great wall'.

6. It is narrated by Thum?mah through Anas: That Umm Sulaym used to spread a leather mattress for the Holy Prophet where he enjoyed his midday nap. Anas relates that when the Holy Prophet woke up, I collected his perspiration and his hair, put these into a bottle and blended them with perfume. Thum?mah relates that when Anas was on the brink of dying he willed that the scent be applied to his coffin.

'Arsa hua Taiba ki galliyon se yeh guzre hai

iss waqt bhi galliyon mein khushboo hain paseene ki'

It has been an age since he (the Prophet ) passed through the alleys of Taiba (Madinah)

Even now the sweet scent of his perspiration remains in those alleys

7. Muslim narrates the following hadith related by Anas in his Sahih: 'He (the Prophet ) was rosy-coloured and (the drops of) his perspiration seemed like pearls.'

The narrations of the Sahabas love for the Holy Prophet are countless, and those listed above are just a glimpse of the many accounts related in the books of Hadith, Tarikh, Seerah etc.

The poet of the Prophet , Hassaan ibn Thaabit (radiallahu anh), for whom the Prophet prayed, saying 'May Allah assist Hassaan with the Angel Jibreel', recited the following beautiful verses of praise for the Beloved Prophet :

'wa ahsanu minka lam tara qatu Aini
wa ajmalu minka lam talidin nisa'u

khuliqta mubarra an min kulli 'aybin
ka annaka qad khuliqta kama tashaa'u'

'My eyes have not seen anyone more magnificent than you
No woman has ever given birth to anyone more beautiful than you
You have been created without any weakness, blemish or flaw
As if you have been created in the way that you wished'

We must know him !

So having established the imperative nature of loving our Beloved Prophet for the validity of our Imaan; now the question must be asked, how can you love someone you you don't know?! The answer is, you can't!

The Qur'an is filled with the praise of the Beloved of Allah and what better source to acquaint ourselves our selves with the his blessed characteristics and attributes than the very word of Allah:

Allah says:

'O Prophet! We have indeed sent you as an observing present witness and a Bearer of glad tidings and a warner.' (Surah Ahzab - 33, v. 45)

'And as a caller towards Allah, by His command, and as a lamp that spreads its light.' (Surah Ahzab - 33, v. 46)

'And indeed you possess an exalted standard of character.' (Surah Qalam - 68, v. 4)

There are many, many other verses in the Qur'an describing the excellence of our Beloved Prophet , in fact, the great Sufi, Rumi e Kashmir, Aarif e Khari, Mian Muhammad Baksh says that the entire Qur'an was revealed in the praise of the Beloved of Allah :

'Shadda madda, zeera, zabara, sab shaan e nabi vich aayya,

Aama loga khabar na koyi, khaasa ramza paayya'

Even the punctuations of the Qur'an have been revealed to describe the excellence of the Prophet ,

The common folk are unaware of this; the distinguished ones (the mystics) have attained the true knowledge of this secret

In addition to reading the Qur'an, there are many classical Islamic books that we can read to learn more about our Beloved Prophet . The great contemporary scholar of Yemen, and a descendant of our Beloved Prophet , as-Sayyid ash-Shaykh Habib 'Ali al-Jifri recommends reading three types of books to learn more about the phenomenal personality of our Beloved Prophet :

1. The Seerah - The biography of the Prophet , and his life events

2. The Khasaais - The compilations from Qur'an and Hadith of those special qualities of the Prophet which were exclusively bestowed on him , and not on any other Prophet .

3. The Shamaail - The descriptions of the actual physical form of the Holy Prophet , his extraordinary beauty, and his character and morals.

Concluding Dua

I would like to conclude with a supplicatory couplet of poetry, asking Allah for the love of the Prophet to become embedded in our hearts, insha' Allah:

Ae Ishq e nabi mere dil mein bhi sama jaana

Mujh ko bhi Muhammad ka deewana bana jaana

May the love of the Prophet be entrenched in my heart

May I also become an ardent lover of Muhammad

Ameen, bi jaah in Nabiyyil Ameen
